Sea shells in fresh water tank

Hi,

I have some sea shells in our 10g for decoration. How does it raise the water hardness? We hadnt thought they would be an issue after being completely washed.

Regards,

Artuk

Most shells are made from calcium. In a tank of water the calcium will slowly dissolve and alter the hardness of the water. If the creature in the shell were still alive it would replace the lost calcium compounds naturally, but because there's nothing there to do the replacement the shell disappears. One or two small shells in a large tank won't make too much difference but more than that and you could be inviting trouble. It is best avoided if possible.
