Hi
i got a breeding pair of Scleromystax Barbatus last sunday.
Pic....

They breed while in the pet shop and i was told she was ready to breed again (belly full of eggs).
At the mo they are sharing a 3 foot tank with 3 other corys, 2 L134 and a few endlers which is sand based. Will it be ok for them to breed in here or shall i put them in a tank of there own with no substrate on the bottom of the tank??? i have a spear 2 foot tank that i can put them in.

What does ppl think????
Does anyone have these or are breeding these that can help me and give me advice????

very nice cories Im not sure about endlers but I would assume they would eat eggs

So Shud i set up the other tank just to be on the safe side??
If i put them in the other tank shud i put sand in the bottom or wud they rather not have it while breeding?

I gotta get some of those...there is a pet store that has breeding size ones for 16 dollars us each! :hyper:

What temperature are you keeping them in. With the other stocking you have mentioned i would has at a guess that its around 26c ish. barbatus prefer much cooler waters around 21c, so i would say yes, get them a tank of their own.

addtitionally, if you were to leave them in there and they did spawn, the plec would have a nice feast on the eggs ;)

Ok thanks, there 2 foot tank is up and running will be moving them into it today. The 3 foot tank there in now is at 26c, but there new tank is at 22. is this alright????

Ive read loads and loads of articles on breeding these fish. They pretty much all say the same thing. Cold water changes. I've been doing daily water changes for about a week now and nothing. Ive done everything the lfs 'that i got them from'told me to do and nothing. For the past 2 days (might sound silly) ive even tryed placing a towel over the tank so nothing can disterb them, Still nothing. Is there something im not doing that i shud be??? Is there something im doing wrong????

Hi. There is a lot more involved in spawning these fish than just doing cold water changes. First, they must be sexually mature. Yours, do appear to be. If so, then months of proper conditioning with large amounts of live food, may be required before spawning will take place. Additionally, besides being one of the harder members of Corydoradine family to spawn, getting eggs is only the first part and it's the easier part. Getting the eggs to hatch and survive can be even more difficult.

As far as spawning at the lfs (very hard to believe, but it does happen) - did you see the fry? Just curious.

Good luck and keep trying. One day you will wake up to eggs. It will probably be the day you least expect them. - Frank

Thanx. I think ill put them back in there main home for now. i just didnt want the eggs to get eatten if they did spawn as there in a tank With 8 pleco's, 5 other corys and endlers. I didn't see the fry in the pet shop as the eggs apparently grew fungi.
Will she be ok as her belly is huge????

Thanx again
