if u have schooling fish, do they actually school.

ive been researching on some sites that say they usually dont if they are commercially breed. but the sites seem untrustworthy..

for fish like tetras

thanks

i have 2 that is not much but they only go 3 inchs away at the most they even eat tougther

In a space filled with fish shoaling species have no need to shoal as they shoal for protection and in this situation it dosen't help. In a lightly stocked tank shoaling species tend to shoal more readily as it can be useful. Species that must be kept together because they need the company of their own kind are often refered to as 'shoaling' however, they tend not to shoal as they just like the company of their own species and they do not use this company as a defense strategy. They are more likely to be seen in ones or twos rather than in a large shoal.

Right after they were introduced my glowlight tetras tended to stick together pretty closely. They were being nipped by my platies who were the original tank inhabitants. However, now that everybody is getting along the glowlights have started to school much less. I'd say they spend about half the time shoaling and half the time investigating the tank and looking for food individually or in pairs. :D

when i had barely any plants in my tank, the fish spread out very far and i assume that's because they could see each other from either end of the tank. now my tank is heavily planted and the fish tend to stay together more.

my schooling fish do school, but not tightly or in a formation or anything fancy like that... they just hang together!! :p
