I am trying to decide on a schooling fish for my 45L tank. I would like to go as small as possible so to have a larger school. Also my girlfriend wants colourful...

My first thought was 10x Dwarf Rasbora Boraras micros, but I am not sure they shoal.

Can anyone suggest another option?

Boraras micros are a perfect choice for a tank what size, well done on picking a great species.

Also look at Boraras maculatus, B. merah (this will be my choice for my next small tank), Danio erythromicron, Hyphessobrycon amandae and Axelrodia riesei. All of those and the B. micros should school, but do remember that most schooling fish school best when mildly threatened by larger fish so the schooling won't be quite as nice as in a larger aquarium with some cichlids.

Kitty Kat - thank you! I was looking at these the other day in mylfs - do you know if the become red when they mature? As they had a mature display tank and I asked 'whats that fish' she said a chilli rasbora - when I found the tank where they were for sale they were much less red so I dismissed them.

Those are Boraras brigittae. Yes they will colour up as they mature, into a lovely red. :good:

They will colour up, yes.. was the display tank considerably more planted than the stock-for-sale tank? But they're also one of the larger Boraras species..

Well after much decision making and lots of name confusion, I now have 12x Boraras merah (Phoenix Rasbora's) - they shoal perfectly too!

Very good choice :good: photos welcome *hint, hint*

I have these fish and the Brigittae which are similar, both species shoal together in the tank as they do in the wild, and are great little fish. These fish are sexually dichromatic. The males when in condition exhibit a more intense red body colour than the females which are plumper.

As pretty as these fish are, I have found they tend to group down in the bottom back corner of my tank which is a real shame. After a bit more research it seems they might not like the lights I need as my plant is heavily planted and they stick to the darkest corner.

May have to work out a redesign to get them out...

Some set-up information, please? Photo?

I'll get some photos sunday :) as well as water readings.
