I'm doing a school project for my education course that is designing a curriculum for a 2nd grade class by California standards. My group's theme is Ocean Week/Month. I don't know a whole lot about marine life (even though I'm a bio major :/ ) so was hoping some of you could possibly help me come up with a couple of ideas.

Some things I need to know are:
What is a sea animal (fish, mammal, invertebrate) that shows variation among its population? It needs to be obvious to a viewer since this is for 2nd graders
Are there any seaplants that produce fruits or flowers?
Are their certain environments in the ocean that affect the inherited characteristics of offspring?
Is there an animal that has several stages in its life cycle? A non-marine example would be a butterfly or frog.

Thank you in advance, it will help me a lot.

Soeey for not responding, but how about a polyp that opens and closes?
It'd be hard work, but thats just what corals are.

I don't intend to keep any of these types of animals. I just need to learn about different animals I could use when designing themed assignments/projects.

Brine shrimp are a great example of animals that have different characteristics based on environment, given different sallinity ranges they will actually have different adaptations.

Cool! That sounds great. Do you know a lot about that or shall I just stick with google?

Clams......start out as a pelagic larval stage and then become sedentary or benthic. Try looking up quahogs.

Flowering marine plants....look up seagrasses. Some examples are eelgrass and surfgrass SH
