HI ALL HAPPY NEW YEAR.
I HAVE BOUGHT A SCALLOP TODAY IT IS OPENING FINE,BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF I HAVE TO FEED IT ANYTHING SPECIAL OR WILL IT EAT THE NORMAL FOOD I FEED THE FISH ON( WHICH IS MARINE FROZEN CUBES).

Yes, you need to supplement its feeding. These are very difficult animals to keep in aquariums, I suggest you do some research immediately.

completely agree... better late than never i guess.....

I AGREE PROPER FOODS ARE PHYTOPLANKTON MARINE SNOW BABY BRINE SHRIMP, OTHER VERY TINY FOODS

IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOT MOVE THE ANIMAL AFTER IT HAS CHOSEN A SPOT

Amen :good:

This comes from Opcn's "sig" but Maddox is one of my favourite internet writers.

Seven sixteenths of one inch, that's the distance you'd have to move your pinky in order to not sound like an idiot. I know the burden of pressing shift to capitalize is a great one, but c'mon you can do better than that. -Maddox

Wondering what the deal was :D at first I saw all the caps and thought "wow, Lynden is really pissed at this guy for buying a scallop" :D

Please excuse that little "outburst" :sly: ... they are difficult, but can be kept. I've owned one once, had no idea I should be feeding it. That was years ago. They can make great pets, so long as the proper conditions are provided.

the question is, is it enough? Im guessing the corals that you have are photosynthetic? Which means they rely heavily on light and outside food is a supplement, a burst of energy for growth that might not be needed in the first place. On the other hand, the scallop requires food, which means they rely on food only, not on light. So they need a lot more food than corals. Right now, you are only feeding the corals which means they scallop might only be getting like 1/10 of its diet from you and maybe 2/10ths of its diet from the tank (very rough estimate, there are variables), so all they are getting, is 3/10ths of its recommended diet. A slow but steady starve it seems....

But remember, upping the marine snow may not be good since it is dead food, seeing that the scallop has food come to it and not go to the food, a lot of the marine snow may be wasted into waste which can be bad for your tank.

Takes some complicated math, some praying, understanding about scallops and what they look like when they are hungry, healthy, etc and you may be able to find an equilibrium. But that may never come or there is no such thing as an equilibrium in your tank.

Agreed with above. Unfortunately scallops and other bivalves can be picky. Try squirting the food directly into where the shells part, that is, the "mouth".
