Say What?

"Parent fish can be seen. "

"This morph is very uncommon, and no one to date has been able to reproduce these rays with success. "

hmmmmmm

Looks hideous. It's not a morph, it's a deformity. Thanks to inbreeding most likely, this pup has been born with its fin disc not properly fused to its snout. That's one set of faulty genes we know about in this fish -- how many more are hidden in its genome? Anyone daft enough to spend money on this thing deserves to be fleeced, frankly.

So yet again, we have deformed fish being sold as something new and different, alongside flowerhorns, butterfly discus, balloon mollies, celestial goldfish, etc.

Cheers, Neale

thanks for cleaning that up neale i honestly don't know much about rays and i thought this was some sort of species rather than a hideous result of interbreeding.

A little further research confirms that this is indeed a deformity, though there seems to be uncertainty about whether it's genetic or else caused by some environmental factor while the embryo is developing. The parallel is with cleft lips in humans, which seem to be caused by the mother's (poor) diet rather than genetics, or at least a combination of both diet and genetics.

So while it's unlikely we'll see batman rays breeding true and thereby flooding the market, I still think these are pretty hideous fish. That you have to somehow starve the female of some particular vitamin to produce them doesn't exactly accord with the general idea of providing our fish with the best possible health. I hope we don't see people trying to breed batman rays deliberately.

Oddly i like my fish to look natural... and healthy, so i don't think i'll be getting one of these...
