Yesterday I was watching that wife swap show. Lame I know but I had nothing better to do :S

Anyways in the one family the mom was real strict and they didn't have any pets so when the new mom came she decided to buy the family a betta. Great idea right? NOPE! She bought one in those darn vases with the plant on top and all the roots below

When I saw it I was so angry    I couldn't believe they would put that on tv. People who don't know any better will see it and think...Oh what a lovely idea and go out and buy one. Think of all the poor bettas whos lives are cut short because of it :-(

I don't understand how people can be so ignorant ???? I mean think about it the betta has no air, no food, no water change which can only equal death. I think I heard they can live up to 3 weeks like that. How Horrible to live 3 weeks without food and without a water change. The Betta will probably get a disease as well like fin rot because of the poor water quality  It just really makes me sad :-(

I've seen that, don't worry...well yes worry, but i don't think they kept the plant in there for very long. You saw the wife, no plants, i think they only kept the cat.

thats terrible.....well hopefully if anyone does go out and buy one of those, they do a little googling about it when they get it home and realize what they've done! the internet will help a lot of the bettas that are bought this way i would imagine.....not all of them though, and that is really sad.

Well... the size of the vase isn't terrible, the plant really isn't bad for the fish, and they CAN get air. The problem is the care instruction sheet that often comes with it that tells people they don't have to feed the fish or change the water. I've got nothing against the betta vase, as long as the owner actually knows how to care for the betta properly... the problem isn't really the setup itself, but the ignorance of the people who often buy it.

I kinda agree Sorell. I'm sure if the people really care they'd think, hey, it seems a bit daft not to feed them, then hey, the waters dirty (if the betta survives), better clean it, then, hey the poor guy can't move much. I'll get a goldfish bowl. I'm sure some have a better life than the ones confined to life in a cup. Amnd death...

Everyone of those I have ever seen...the plant is in a plastic cup that sits down inside the vase..so you can take it off and clean the water for the fish and feed it..and it has a gap where it doesn't fit quite right and thus let's air in as well. I'm sure you have a few ignorant people out there..who are looking for a maintence free pet..but we all know..there is NO such thing..but I think most people know they have to do those things, regardless of what the instructions say.

But, if it truly bother's you that much...you can write a letter to the network producer's and to the show's producer's noting your displeasure with the situation. If you see that the fish is nor doing well (if you can see it on tv) I would contact Peta or something..they are ademantly against those vases lol.

I dont think it's thats bad as long as you know how to properly care for the betta. Such as weekly water chages, leaving room for air, feed twice a day ect...

I have never seen one in person so I didn't know that the plant was in a plastic cup that you could remove  I thought the plant was planted in the vase and the roots grew downwards into the gravel preventing you from removing it :X

As long as you can remove the plant to feed the betta, change water and air can get in then I guess it isn't as bad as I thought it was. Thank Goodness!! :)
