Hey, I've read the previous threads on sand, and found recommended is play sand or pool sand. I live near the atlantic ocean where there's an abundance of beach sand. I think someone mentioned this is bad because there may be chemicals in it. Is this correct? Is there any way it is usable? or is it simply better to use store sand because it is cheap anyway.

You need to consult local info resources on the condition of your beach. Call tourist information or something.

you also need to contact the local authority who owns the beach as you don't want to get arrested for stealing someone elses property (ie the sand)

IMHO it is not safe anyway due to bacteria, micro-organisums etc.

I use beach sand in several tanks of mine. It looks OUTSTANDING!

If you look back a couple threads, I posted my methods on sterilizing the sand.

One more note is that you should not use beach sand in soft-water tanks. It will leach out trace elements over the years and contribute to the overall hardness. For example, my pH from the tap is 7.4 and GH is about 6. In a tank with beach sand (properly sterilized of course) the pH is up around 7.8-7.9 and the GH is about 12.

I think I'll stick to play sand. Enough people seem to be using it with no problems, and it does avoid some of those other issues. Thanks a lot.
