I am just starting a tank and i know i dont want gravel but what kind of sand should it get? does it really even make a difference? (p.s. i hope to get some live plants later so does that make a difference in what type i should get?)

Any help would be.....helpful!

Hi Fish-Fanatic,

Here is a link to a really good article somebody on this forum pointed me to. It should hopefully address your questions about sand-- I know it helped me! :D

I thought sand was only suitable for marine aquariums. I may be wrong, but i would look into carefully first.

I did a lot of research on sand when I was going to convert my 80gallon into a cichlid tank. The 2 best ones seemed to be play sand or pool filter sand which you can get at almost any home depot or hardware store. You have to wash it though just like gravel and a good way is to use a 5 gallon bucket and fill it half way up and just hose it down with a powerful sprayer to get the impurities to the surface.

There is nothing wrong with sand in fw tanks, and I completely agree that pool filter and play sand are among the cleanest sands you can add to your tank. You can also use construction sand, river sand, concrete sand, and blasting sand, though these tend to be dustier. There are a couple of different play sands as well, I find the best ones are simply washed and sifted beach sand - these ones are virtually dustless and look very nice too.
