sand

Well, if anyones good on sand it is me. I have sand in my tank and it is great IMO. But let this topic to all the talking for you. I show it to every person wanting to know anything about sand. You may ask your questions there if your questions are not answered. Ask questions there not here, to get all about sand in one bundle. - Sand Vs. Gravel

HTH :D

sand is mostly used in saltwater tanks that have coral .without coral saltwater tanks would have to have crushed coral bottoms to raise the ph.but in freshwater its not reccommended .try a natural gravel it comes in different sizes .some as small as coarse sand.without an undergravel filter sand does not hold benificial bactirium.which needs flowing water to survive.its the only thing consuming ammonias produced by waste +sand is had to clean

I have to agree on you on this I've been using sand in freshwater tanks since I started (i have tried gravel and didn't like it harder to clean than sand)

I don't like one any more then the other, it just depends on what I am trying to achieve.

Here are some things that I find to be the case

-one is not harder then the other to maintain. Gravel needs to be vacuumed fully. Sand needs only a surface vacuum. Six of one...

-there are all sorts of rumours of sand and trapped gasses, or bad bacteria... all sorts of nonsense. I find this to be a load of mulm. In all of my years I've never had that problem, or known anyone to have that problem. The only place I find it to be a problem is on the web, spoken by someone who has never acually experienced that problem

-sand makes an undergravel filter useless

-sand can destroy the impeller of an external hanging power filter

-sand is perfect if you have fish that like to dig

-sand is super cheap, you can get it from Home Depot or whatever home improvement store is around you for 5 bucks per 50lb bag. You can use any kind of sand - beach sand, concrete sand, construction sand, play sand, blasting sand etc. Just wash it really well.
