I want to add a sandy spot to my 55 gallon tank. Is this going to be a problem with the plecos or the corries? any other tropical fishies cant have sand?

Shouldn't be a problem - my corries love the very fine gravel that I use (not quite as fine as sand but fine enough for them to forrage in without any damage to their barbels) and I don't have any problems with the bristlenoses that live in the same tank. Most loaches love sand and some will bury themselves in it. Do you intend just one place with sand or a combination of both and how are you going to constrain the sand in one place?

i was planning on having an open spot in my larger gravel for the sand spot. i was going to try to put the sand into a pocket in the gravel, where it will be pushed aside. if that fails, i will put an entire layer of sand down and over what i want with my larger gravel.

I wish you luck with it - my fish dig into the substrate and move it everywhere. Every time I do a water change I straighten out the substrate so that the ornaments don't fall on anyone and cover up all the plant roots that get exposed by their digging, but a very short time later it's back to how they want it.

maybe i will go completely sand then. i spend nearly an hour on the tank every night as it is =)
