I have made the switch to an all natural sand substrate, live plants, no plastic environment for my 46 gallon bowfront freshwater tank.
Actually bought a 40# bag of paver sand from Lowe's cause it looked more natural and "chunky" wet than did the pure sifted silica playsand.
My 4 clown loaches could never be happier. They play in it, bury themselves in it, and sleep out in the open on it.
Not to mention the plants are thriving and really have a great root system compared to any gravel tanks I've had in the past.
The best thing is algae and waste control....
No algae on the gravel problems anymore.
Lastly, the sand setup looks the best from any tank I've ever kept...I'll post some pictures soon...Just wanted to give a little of my experience. Cheers.
