Like it says... In the 55g there is white fuzz on the sand substrate near the front. Looks like some kind of fungi growth but I did a vac a few days ago and the catfish had been busy overnight and the front was clear of any food etc. Does anyone know what it is and should I get rid of it immediately? Thing is they just today had their last dose of Protozin put in. Fish aren't bothered by it as far as I can tell and all have gotten over their ich problem too.
Hugs,
P.
Edit:Just thought I'd add I just checked the NitrItes and it is at 0. Ammonia 0. We do have a high ph of approx 8 (hard to tell the when the colours match too well. ) Last time I checked last week NitrAtes were at 12.5.

I'll bet that the meds disrupted the natural cycles in your tank and the fungus thats been feeding ontiny tiny specs of food in the gravel simply expanded, I'd get some MTS in there.

Late pm in the summer yes it does. I've stopped most of it reaching the tank but if the patio curtain isn't pulled across for that short time then it will fall just into the front a little. And with kiddies it happens more often than I like. :grr:
Well, being that that last dose went in this afternoon I shall do a 10% w/c and clean up the substrate again in the morning.
Thanks for the help.

Ok. Did a w/c of around 10% this morning and when I came home the fuzz is back. No sun on the tank. Tis cloudy today. Water params are all good. Fish aren't bothered but it looks horrid. :dunno: Is there some way to be rid of it? Anyone?

if the tank is less than a 2 months old it is common and will pass. it will take over your tank and look like cottonballs/dandelions, but it is a stage that will pass. Then comes the diatom algae stage, then the cyano, then the thread algae, and finally everything will reach a balance and algae will lose a foothold. That's my experience anyways.

None of my other tanks have ever had it in. The filter was a matured filter and didn't require cycling. I've had it running about a month now and gradually added it's residents. Params are all excellent and the white algea (assuming that's what it is) only affects the front where the sun sometimes reaches. It doesn't effect the fish thankfully but it's horrid the way it seems to occassionally let puffs of cloud off from it. I am disturbing the substrat a little daily just to try and shift the damn stuff now. But within a half hour it's back again. I've tried to avoid letting food drop in that area now too. *doh* :dunno:
