Sand for tank

Hi all,

I am thinking of using sand for my tank and do not know what type of sand to use.
Can I use the coral sand

if its 4 marine or saltwater, but if its fresh water playsand

If it's a marine tank, then yes. If it's a freshwater tank, no. Never used sand as a substrate though so I don't know what kind in a freshwater tank.

You can use coral sand in a fresh-water tank but its gonna bring the PH in the tank up and the hardness of your water. This is fine for African Cichlids but most other tropicals it won't suit. Also, if you've got any fish that like to sift through the substrate, crushed coral sand is sharper than say play-sand and can cause trouble with gills.

Make sure you rinse the sand through properly before putiing it in the tank aswell.
I use an old pair of tights! (not my own incidentally )

I prefer Pool Filter Sand to Play Sand because of it's heavier grain. It's meant to be in water where Play Sand is not. Just make sure you thoroughly wash it before adding it to the tank.
