i just use my python and keep it about 1 inch off of the top of the sand, and it will suck all the debris up off the top. doesnt take that long, only as long as it takes you to walk the sand with the syphon. is this for your 55?
I put about 1/3 to 1/2 in a bucket at a time and leave water running in it for a while.. Mix it around with your hand and keep going til the overflowing water runs clear...
Then on with the next bucket... boring eh.. but worth it, settle nicely in the tank.
You dream of an LFS that sells mature filters, clean sand, soaked bogwood, snailess plants, helpful staff, washed laterite, healthy fish, and 99% discount cards...... (i know some do some of these for the pedants out there!!!!)
whoops, gottcha now. umm, yeah you just have to wash it, and wash it and wash it. if you use play sand it takes awhile to get clean. you can always try using different sand like pool filter sand, that is supposed to clean alot faster than play sand. i am making the switch to PFS right now during the installation of my new DIY BG.
The way I clean sand is to put the sand into a pillow case and then run water through it until the water runs clear. I recommend that this is performed in a bath or outside, though!
The eay I did it was put 1/4 sand in bucket and brought it outside. Got kids to clean the sand while I filled another bucket. When the first was done gave them the second and brought in the first and put it in the tank. Did it until I had the amount of sand I wanted. Took about half an hour. The only hard part was convincing the kids to do it .
there is a cheat
u can get dirll bits to mix paint up vrey cheap
use oneof those on the sand on the bucket and boom your onto a winning streak
i had to put sand in a friends 7ft tank he just happned to have one of these sticking out from a draw i soon started using it
