Sand As A Substrate

Unless you specifically want sand (for corys or similar) I'd stick with small round gravel and laterite or aquatic compost of some kind.
Sand, IME, is a PITA. It has no nutrients worth speaking of, goes anaerobic very quickly and very little grows well in it, as far as i've seen anyway. It's also a pain to keep clean.
It can look nice but it's not worth the trouble...

Depends on the plants but most will do ok in sand, its just the delicate ones like HC and glosso that will struggle
