sand and gravel

i have a 55 gallon with gravel and a UGF.
If i mixed in sand with the gravel could i still use the UGF or would it make to much of a mess??
i like the look of the sand a gravel together.

I would imagine that the sand will fall right through your UGF and gum up the whole works. If you like the sand and gravel look maybe it's time to get rid of the UGF for a better system??? I used to have the UGF and would have trouble every year or so with them and have a big mess to clean up the works... Well anywho, I'm guessing that sand and UGF just really aren't meant for eachother.
