i was thinking of trying to add a section of sand to my substrate, a bit like the pic below. blue gravel yellow sand!

anyone got any good ideas on how to stop the two mixing together, and just turning into a mess?

you could add some plastic (like a tupperware box) and put this around it. Put some holes in it so it isnt completley sealed off.

exactly what i was thinking. thing is how do you avoid the edges showing, also the gravel moves quite naturally with tank flow, so you could end up seeing the container.

you wont have t ohave it right to the top of the substrate. If you have a look at the early stages of my 60l, i have a patch of gravel, i just put mine on top. It has mixd a bit but it isnt that bad as most of it is covered by plants anyway.

thanks, I'll look into that!

well what i did was find some small rocks...big enough to hold back the sand. add the sand first...and sort of bunch it up with the big rocks. it holds back the sand well but gives it an arena type look.
