it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission
got up this morning and sama is dead :-( , most of her fins ripped awayand all the girls acting like little angels . i'm gutted this is my first lot of females. What do i do now? i have now only got 3 and understand that you need 4 or more to keep the peace. do i buy more or what please help

I'm very sorry to hear that. The same happened to me some time ago, and it was horrible.

Well, you have a choice. Do you want to separate them all, or do you want to go get another one? If you do go get another one, get AT LEAST one more, pull everyone out of the tank, rearrange the tank quite a bit, and then introduce the new one FIRST. Also, now would be a good time to add a lot of different hiding places, so this does not happen again.

Oh no ! So sorry to hear :-(
Kiarra's plan sounds like a good one. But are you very sure they attacked her ? In young fish, fins can frey awfully fast after death and if for some reason (heat by any chance ??) she died just after you last saw her, she could easily have started decaying for her to look like that by the morning.

they heat was fine and her fins have big chunks missing out of them, she was fine when i went to bed last night and dead this morning, i'm thinking of putting them in my bottom dwellers tank as this is well planted with loads of hiding places, i think itwas rizzo that did it because she has a chunk missing aswell

I'm so sorry to hear about Sama :-( Was she not the one who was quiet on arrival? maybe they realised this and so she was easy to pick on :dunno:

I had lots of problems with my girly tank till I upped the numbers. I now have 9 in 96 litres and although they aren't all the best of friends, there's much less agression in there than there was. I was ready for abandoning the project as I was so fed up of the nipping and bullying. No ripped fins lately which is great and its so lovely to look into the tank and see lots of beautiful girls swimming around.

Kiarra gives good advice. I would make sure there are loads of plants in there, think underwater jungle, so they have lots of places to hide. If you can, then adding more girls would probably benefit the tank.

Good luck!

My girls have albino, bronze & bandit cories in with them plus khulie loaches and get on fine. I have also had betta juvies in with peppered cories and leopard frog plecs and also never had any problems.

Which of the bottom-dwellers would they be sharing with?

Sounds like they should be ok with these although I don't know what a syno ocellifer is, maybe you could check on the loach board or catfish board whichever it fits in :dunno:

If all else fails, could you divide their tank up into 3?

I am so sorry to hear what happened. Please don't blame yourself. It is hard to forsee this kind of thing.

I have 3 girls and 2 corys in my 10 gal. They all came out of quarentine and went in together yesterday. So far no squabbles. I had intended to have 4 girls but the 4th girl is pretty sick (and in quarentine).

Maybe if you find an older girl to add as your 4th? I remember seeing somewhere that size is a factor in how girls view each other....please someone correct me if I am wrong here. I agree with other posts to take everything out of the tank and rearrange it before adding the girls and new girl again.

Good luck
Sandi

I'd have to also offer the suggestion of considering to split them up.

I am contemplating splitting my 6 girls up because the nipping never ends. And I can't imagine how NOT fun it must be to be in that environment for them always. My plants don't seem to do very well in there either, so I'm constantly having to replace them (PetSmart always has these wacky types of plants that always die on me - uugh) just to keep enough in there to keep the nipping at a bare minimum...I'm going to make one last try at removing them all, rearranging, and then putting them all back in. If that doesn't work, that tank will be divided and there will be additional tanks around my house for the girls. Just don't want to continue the risk - BUT that's only if the rearrangement doesn't work.

As for your tank, I'd have to say I'd consider splitting them with the number you have left.

hi i have one similar and i will get her and another to make numbers up all free of charge and will get them to you Thursday but will be early at 8.30 will that be OK with you this will help with the others
