Hi,
I live on Long Island, and I went to East Islip to go crabbing today. I caught three crabs, and I don't want to eat them. So I took them home and put them into a tank with freshwater, since I don't have a saltwater tank. They seem to be doing fine so I was wondering it they could survive and thrive in a freshwater tank, even though I caught them in the ocean.

No they cant. the osmosis shock will be enough to cause them a painful death.

Not to mention the effects that freshwater will have on the rst of their intenral organs.

Salt water crabs also need salt for the vital trace eliments that help to keep their shells healthy and to provide them with enough minerals to regrow their new shells every few weeks.
Return the crab back to the ocea if you wantit to live, however i fear that the damage already done to these crabs might not be reversable now. :(

no offense, but if we took you off this planet and put you somewhere with low levels of oxygen, i dont think you would be ok for long...
