Adding the salt wasn't necessarily the wrong thing to do as it's supposed to stop the infection spreading further. However, if you knew some of your other fish were sensitive to it you should have looked for a different medication or treated the sick fish in its own hospital tank.

Not a big deal though. If you're looking to remove the salt, then all you need to do is a few water changes.
I'm normally very careful about what I add to the tank. I don't know why I did it I just wasn't thinking. I also didn't really research about the use of salt with certain fish so I didn't know it would be harmful for the angel. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time unfortunately.

Is one table spoon in 70L (15.4 Gallons) harmful to the angel or any of the other fish?

Hi, I need some advice. I'm new to these forums so forgive me if this is in the wrong place.

I own a 70L (15 Gallon) Juwel Rekford tropical community tank.
I currently down 3 dwarf rainbow fish, 3 platies and one Angel fish.

I've been running it for a year. I lost two fish that were both platies, bought from the same shop from the same tank so it must have been due to genetic problems as all my other fish are fine.

One of my drawf rainbow fish has fin rot. This morning, I added approx 1 table spoon of API aquarium salt to the tank as I heard it was good for treatment. I didn't realise that it needed to be introduced with water changes.

I now know this was a mistake and I should of set up a separate tank for the single fish.

I have live plants and know that salt is harmful for them. I'm hopefully going to upgrade to a 120L Juwel Lido tank within the next 2 or 3 weeks so I'm not to bothered if the plants are effected as ill just buy new ones.

Basically, should I be worried about the health of my fish? I know I can remove the salt using water changes but how many should i perform a day to completely remove the salt? I've been keeping fish successfully for over a year now and I really need to advice.

Thanks

Can you elaborate a bit? Why do you want to put salt in your aquarium? Is it freshwater?

Are you asking if you should have salt in your aquarium?

Generally the answer is no, unless you need it for a specific purpose. This can include treating for illnesses, or keeping brackish fish.

Yes it is freshwater. I added it to treat 'fin rot' for one of my drawf rainbows.

I know this was the wrong thing to do so I only need some advice about how to remove the salt as I heard angel fish can be sensitive to it.
