I put Menlow and Dogma in the one gallon bowl together...haven't checked on them lately though...lol that would be awful...

Anyway...how much "flaring" at each other is too much? They don't do it constantly, but I've moved their bowls a little bit just to give them a break from competing with each other. Neither seemed stressed by it...

Is a little aquarium salt good to put in with bettas? Does epsom salt work? Is there any GOOD special water treatment for bettas?

Seems like I should have asked these questions first, then got bettas...

Let me make sure I've understood this: you've put two male bettas in the same bowl?

Please seperate them immediately - they will kill each other! They aren't called Siamese Fighting Fish for nothing!

If it's a male and a female, you can only put them together for spawning and you should not leave them unattended because one will kill the other (usually the male kills the female).

Epson salts is used occasionally to cure constipation in fish (allegedly - I've never tried it). Aquarium salt is used occasionally to cure ich or torn fins but isn't necessary every day. The only thing you need to add to the water is dechlorinator.

lol, I guess you skipped over the part of my post where I said "lol that would be awful".

I know I'm no expert with bettas, but I'm not that stupid.

this entire thread confused me, I can't tell if your joking or not

dix, the male "Bruiser" that you got 3 days ago already passed?

I can't say how much is too much but again at shows they only let them flare for a few minutes at a time. Now you have to decide how long that is :look:

I guess I can be confussing on the message boards too... :*)

Yes, of course I am kidding. I would never put two male bettas together.

Yeah, Bruiser died yesterday. The lady at the lfs said they lost quite a few of them to a fungus or some kind of disease.

The thing is, people really do do such stupid things. I appreciate it was meant as a joke, but I almost had a heart attack, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one!

Maybe we should just right this off as the joke that got away?

I use a couple of pinches of rock salt everytime I do a water change.

I read at a Betta related site that adding salt is recommended. But then an experienced fish store owner told me that salt will damage their labyrinth organ. I don't have Bettas myself, at least not yet, but I'd go without salt.

I don't use salt at all and none of my babes seem to mind

I recently learned through an awesome article that melafix and bettafix does terrible, terrible things to the labyrinth organ as well, makes perfect sense, needless to say I won't use those anymore (I only have used them a couple of times anyway) :)

 I'm SO glad you said that. I think the world of Melafix because of the miracles it's done with some of my torn up platy rescues (regrew fins in a matter of days). I was wondering if adding a little with the bettas might help with stress, but now of course I won't add that or salt. Both seem to be doing fine...knock of wood. My plan is, down the road, to get two females, put them in seperate bowls, and set them next to the males. First I'll see if I can keep Dogma and Menlow around longer than a week.

Wuvmybetta....is that article regarding melafix/bettafix available online somewhere?? Can you post the link...I'd like to read it because I using bettafix right now to grow both my boys' tails back (working quite nicely) after a little bout of fin rot.

since it was on another forum I pm'ed it to Scarab, I'll find it and send it to you in a little bit Laura :)
