i am thinking about getting a salamander/newt. wut size tank do they need and do they like it very shallow with rocks poking out of the surface or deep with a floating dock type thing. thanks in advance for any info :)

heh by the way do they make good pets eerr not really? which one newt or salamander

about 6 months ago on a whim i picked up 2 firebelly newts, i kept them in a 10 gallon tank, in about 4-5 inches of water, lots of live plants, and some bogwood/rocks sticking out above the water for them to rest on if they felt like it

the other day they laid eggs, i only know this because i found 10 baby newts swimming around

they're honestly a little boring as far as activity goes, but the chicks dig them

ya ok i could house like two in a ten gallon. o ive been looking at the firebelly, its cool. hey they are just as fun as fish (cuz you dont do anything with fish or newts........)

the hardest part of keeping them has been finding food they'll eat, its hard for me to get live food around here, so i'm forced to feed them frozen stuff a lot, so far they'll only eat frozen bloodworms, but they go nuts for the stuff

the other hard part is keeping the tank clean, it seems to be a lot more difficult with a partially filled tank, but that might just be all the plants i've got in there too

You could actually keep 3-4 in a ten gallon. When they are younger they like only 4-5 inches of water, but as they get older, you will notice that they become mainly aquatic, and you will have to rise the water level, while still keeping some land.
Also do not keep them with the firebelly toads because I've seen what they do together at the pet shops. The poor newts are just crawling around minding their own business, and here comes a toad and grabs the little newt. That's why a lot of newts that are kept with them die, lose an eye or two, and lose limbs. On their own toads make great pets though, and 3-4 could be housed in a ten gallon, in an enclosure similar to the newts, or one with lots of moss and wood branches. It would have to have 1-2 inches of water still, and get misted 2-3 times a day.

dosent sound to hard, umm do yu have to clean out the whole cage or siphon it once in a while?

you'll have to clean it out all the way from time to time

i noticed with mine its really hard to keep the glass clean and i end up having to scrape off algae about once a week
