Got a Plec on monday as LFS had one in . The woman did say she was unsure on species but it's a sailfin My question is would he eat smaller fish

I had 16 neons and 5 danio's in tank noticed this morning i'm down to 8 neons and only 3 danio's (2 males 1 fem :S )

Cause if he didn't eat them ...Where the hell did they go ? lol

Bumping after half an hour?

Check for dead fish under ornaments and stuff and do a water test :). Plecs (like any fish) may nibble on things if they are dead, but will not eat live fish, and certainly not that many.

Though I hope you know how big sailfins get ;).

after working in the aquatic trade for many years lrg common plecs do attack and eat live fish ive seen them do it

water stats are all fine and done a water change last night before i posted all plants moved nothing there checked filter aswell but nothing there either

Checked tank this morning and i'm now down to 7 neons and can't see the female danio anywhere the males were chasing here like mad yesterday so she's either been munched or she's hiding somewhere

guess it's a case of disapearing fish again lol

i dont think ive every seen a large common or sailfin attack or eat any fish ive kept fish for a long time aswell and i disagree with saying they attack others. maybe is sumat intrudes into there terrotary they mite have a shuffle n nudge em away but they dont chase them.

i had two 14" sailfins and never ever had a single problem with them and they were in a tank with neons corys angels platties the usual tropical fish.

luke.

Yeah, it wouldent make sense for them to do that, and I've never seen or heard of it.

Plecs can be territorial and chase fish (usually just other plecs and catfish), but the common plecs like sailfins would not chase down small fish and eat them. Apart from anything else, they don't have the anatomy to catch small fish lol.

Maybe some of the carnivorous plecs would if desperate, but I cant see even them being any good at it lol.

The plec didn't kill these fish...

Certainly you mean 10+ inch sailfin's? I have a 6 or 7 inch sailfin in a tank with cardinals, black neons, von rios and gold pristellas and have not lost a one... They are mainly herbivores right? Mine loves algae wafers and boiled zucchini

He does chase my silver dollars thou but, I believe its more of a territory thing as my SD's are full grown
