i have a common pleco and i am wanting to get a chocolate pleco. i would also like to get a third and cant decide between a gold spotted or a sail fin pleco. any sugestions would b much apreciated. all four fish around here are about the same price so that makes the dicision harder.
i have another tank that will have a pictus, common bristle nose and peppermint bristle nose unfortuantly i cant fit any more fish in there :-( . i love catfish, its just too hard to decide. i would prefer the chocolate pleco but would the gold spotted and sailfin go in better together? wich would b the best combo? i love my common pleco.

thanks everyone, ally.

If that's the case, none of the plecs you posted about are suitable for your tank (inluding the one you have, sorry). All of them are extremely large growing plecs. If you have a new tank that's about 6ft x 2ft x 2ft, that's a different kettle of fish. :good:

im getting a 6ft plus tank. there is no way id keep them in there all 2gether thats extremly cruel, that im not and i have done my research just cant decide what one i want, the other pleco is only an inch long and will soon be re-homed. yes i do have a 60L and a 20L the 20L at the moment only has baby guppies in it im not sure what i wanna do with it. my 60L as 2x dwarf gouarmis, bristle nose, yoyo loach, kuhli loach, 3x glow light tetras, 3x golden pencil fish and an angel (its only small being re-homed with the pleco) those arnt my final plans for that tank eather, in there i want to have my bristle nose, a pictus catfish and a peppermint bristle nose.
thanks for you concern but as everyone should i research my fish so i know im doing the right thing by them and there is no way i will get these fish until my new larger tank is set up and cycled i want the fish to live a long happy life not a small cramped sad one.
thanks again, and if you have any other sugestions i would like to hear them.

I have a gold spot and hes a real bully, wont accept any other plec in what he regards as his territory.
He/she is now around 10 inches long including the tail and in a 55 gallon.
If you do get a gold spot then make sure he is last to go in and not first.

Well seeing as I'm a huge fan of the common plec, I'd say get the tank and keep your common :)

Both sailfins and gold spots can be incredibly grumpy with other plecs, the gold spots more so (assuming we're talking about L001s and not another gold spotted one, or gold nugget?) - sailfins can get to 2ft, and grow quickly, so it'd probably be best to wait til you get your new tank then get one.

Looks wise I prefer the gold spot if I had to pick between the two, size wise a gold spot stays around 10-16" so is smaller than a sailfin, but temperament wise a sailfin is milder mannered (but still quite bossy as far as plecs go).

But I prefer commons all round, personally :D Better mannered and lovely looking.

i love my common n he/she has so much personality.

i am deffinanltly getting a big tank, and then will get my other two plecos, i am thinking i like the idea of the gold spot better i think. i have alot of thinking and planong to do before i got another two plecos, but i cant wait. i also think the comon is one of the best but unfortuantly i dont realy have the room too house more than one.

thanks ally.

Well best of luck with everything - one thing you should know before you get your chocolate plec is that most plecs sold as such are indeed common plecs, just the "chocolate albino" colouring. So while you dont want another common plec, if you go for the chocolate plec, you may end up with one.

Here's pics of a chocolate albino so you know what to avoid:

And this is the true chocolate plec - but bear in mind, the chocolate albino I posted pics of is more common in LFS:

Saying that, if you're getting a big tank, and aren't worried about size (if you were considering a gibby previously which get bigger than commons I'm assuming size isn't an issue), I'd probably go for the chocolate albino over the L001. Mine has a very sweet personality and never causes any aggro :)

So I'd say, get the 6ft tank, keep the common you have, and get either the L001 or the chocolate albino - depending on whether you want a more feisty (L001) fish, or more chance of a peaceful tank (chocolate albino). ;)

ok thank you verry much for that, i think i am gonna stick with the chocolate and gold spotted, because they are abit smaller n add a little extra variety to that tank (well as much as i can, we dont have that much of a variety of plecs here) there will be alot of hiding places and i want to get them all as small as i can. i think i like the idea of a more fiesty fish aslong as there will be no problems.

thanks again for the advice, ally.
