With respect to the advice I've recieved regarding the java moss and "achoring" it....would it be safe to anchor it to a tarracotta plant pot? I've got 2 really teenie ones, for seedlings. The perfect size for a female or small male to hide in...as long as its safe. Thanks!

Yep. I've done as much with mine a few times past. I've also used coconut shells, which look very cool and natural.

do a search on the DIY portion of TFF and you'll find a neat DIY for creating coconut shell caves.

I've used the terracotta planters for "caves" in several of my small tanks. There haven't been any ill effects so far.

Haven't tried the pots yet but did the coconut. It took a bit to find one in Mid-winter in the Midwest...It's a long process but really cool when you get done. I boiled the 1st one I did to the point of burnt blackness but had purchased 2 just in case. Yummm love that coconut meat!! A labor of love for sure.

Hehehe....that show I feel when we buy coconuts so that we can make cocohuts for my hermit crabs. Ahhh...the sacrifices we made for the love of our animals, hey? LOL! Plus, the hermies love it too...so it all gets eaten for sure. :)

Wow, coincidental, I was pondering this question myself today.

And now I am intrigued by the coconut shells, exactly what do you do to prepare them? I have never actually seen a coconut before, except in pictures and on tv. :p

And does anyone else have any neat ideas that are for tank decoration?

Like I said, in the DIY section there's a complete how-to. It's even stickied. :) Very simple project, and can be quite tastey, done right. ;)

My mum died recently and I found loads of terracotta pots in dads old shed. Needless to say they are in my shed now... I have put some of them in with my bettas and they use them like caves and sort of dive out and flare at me

i just want to give a word of warning... i had a boy get stuck in the hole at the bottom of his pot, so you might want to seal up the hole!

:X ouch never thought of that...We had a pet rat get stuck in a sock once he used to sleep in it chewed a hole and got his head stuck...I had to get him out I wouldnt mind but he was never tame that rat took my life in my hands and he wasnt at all grateful.

Thanks for the warning. LOL
I bought a bag of polished rocks from the Walmart craft department for a little over a buck and I'm going to use that. But the holes in the bottom of the teenie things I have are too small for any of the fish to even get into I think. Nevertheless, I won't take any chances. hehehe If I use them, I'll plug the holes. :)

I stand corrected! The coconut shell cave DIY appears to no longer be stickied in the DIY section. A simple search in the DIY section should turn it up rather quickly, though.
