Hi All

I am new to the list and really just want to learn much more. I have kept Oscars for about 20 years now and LOVE them. My last pair were even happy enough together to breed. We moved to a new region and some how with time about a year after the move all my fish died.

I then closed up the tank and decided no more fish for me - well you all know how that went!!!

I have started up again, but have had pressure from friends and family to have something with the Oscars, so we started slowly with 3 Oscars, 2 Parot fish. pleco and a pangasius. All has gone well over the three weeks we have added the fish. Now white spot outbreak, Pangasius looked the worst. Treated with Protozin and lost the Pangasius in minutes. Not familiar with these guys have tried twice before with them, but have been unsuccessful. Love them almost as much as Oscars would love to have success with these guys.

Any advice would be appreciated.

PS 400L tank all fish juveniles.

In all honesty, I'd advise you to give up on the Pangasius. Even the 'smaller' species grow to over 3 feet long; you would need a huge tank to keep a fully grown one.
I believe thay are scaleless, so are much more senstive to treatments than most fish, as they absorb too much of the medicine through their skin.

Would agree with your views. Going to stick to my oscars. trying to get hands on a arrowana but difficult to get hands on a small one. They should be ok with oscars?

An arowana would probably be ok with oscars; it depends on the character of the individual fish, but again, arowanas grow to 2 or 3 or even 4 feet in length. I doubt if even a 400l tank is going to be big enough.

Like the arrowana, just battle to find them in sa. Had arrowana with oscars before, but he jumped out the tank. Then gota small one, but the Oscar thought he was live food. Trying to get a small one so they grow big together.

Hi welcome, Hope this doesn't come across badly but please do the aro a favour a get a half decent sized tank first, They are prone to a number of deformaties, all caused by keeping them in a small tank, your really looking at a minimum of a 7x3x2 before you should even consider keeping arowanas,

and to be fair 3 oscars and 2 parrots in a 400L is already overstocked

Thanks for advice. What else would survive in the tank with the two oscars. Have tried other cockles but very agressive. Or should I just leave as is. Also is it best to add new fish at once with setting up new tank (been running about a month now). Had outbreak of whitespot and lost Oscar yesterday. Treated and seems under control now

Oscar Mad; the information in this post is worrying me...

This tank has been set up for only a month? Did you cycle it in any way? You really shouldn't be losing an oscar to whitespot and the next day be saying that it seems under contol

Do you have some test kits for your water? If you have, can you post the results please? And if you haven't, can you go and buy a decent Master test kit instead of thinking of even more unsuitable fish you can try and cram into your tank, please.

I hope this doesn't too sound harsh, but as Davo86 said, you are already overstocked, you've had a very recent outbreak of disease, and you've had two fish die as well. You should be getting this stuff sorted first.

400l is a starter for mini monsters..

if u want to keep monster fish, go for 700l+ otherwise it wont looks nice. or they wont be happy.. then what is the point in keeping somthing rather different..?

Long term plan to get bigger tank . After reading all the responses I am going to stick with my 2 oscars, 2 parrots and pleco. Water tested with tetra kit and all within acceptable parameters. Just for interest, got a call from hobbyist offering me his 30 cm arrowana. Will have to decline offer to avoid future problems. My tank has external tetra canister filter. Do I need to add additional filter for extra aeration, or can I leave as is

When u come to filters begger the better. Go for sump or somthing. Big fish and ready made filter dont go together.
In my 450l tank.. (see profile) I have 3 eheim big externals and 2 internals. Still I feel I could do with one more.

What were the parameters, out of interest?
