I went to my lfs, and saw one. it was crzy. its lower jaw jutted out, and its teeth were LONG for it only being aboout 3 inches long. im looking to buy it, but im reading up first. They're suppossed to be pretty rare, and the internet isnt helping much. Im wondering how much space i need, how mean they get, whether they school, and im sure the food can pretty much be anything. Thanks in advance everyone.

FYI it was freshwater

Common names are often misleading and unsusual fish should always be sold with their scientific name as well.

The fish you were looking at were almost certainly Hydrolycus scomberoids, a large predatory Characin from South America. These fish do not make for good aquarium fish and live shorterned life spans when kept in captivity, why this is no one knows. I would urge you not to buy the fish as buying them just fuels the demand for more of them to be taken from the wild only to die within a few months.

yes, that does make sense, they grow large and woouldnt really be suited. Ifound another deal, and i think im gonna go with it. Three large red belllied w/ a tank and stand for $150 At the lfs, they have the barracuda or whatever it is in a 10 gallon w/ some big 'ol catfish, and it just hovers in one spot. i wanna watch to see if it lives
