Rusty Plec

Hi All,

I was at my LFS yesterday, and they had something called a "Rusty Plec"

The closest I can come to with some reseach is a L137 or L310 or LDA51.

Not bad @ £9.50

Anyone have any experience at keeping these?

Good price, my LFS have them at £15. Very tempting but they get to a large size

'Rusty Plec' is the common name for Hypostomus cochliodon (L310), but the majority are actually Hypostomus sp. Paraguay.

Either way, £9.50 is a great price, suspiciously low in fact. If it has blue/steel eyes then it's most likely Hypostomus soniae L137, and a steal.

I've had one for a couple of years now, it's about 15-17cm atm. A very attractive and placid plec IMO. They have very similar requirements to Panaque, although ideally prefer it a bit cooler.

ive got one, not sure which one but hes great. cost me a tenner, though the same shop is now selling them at 25 quid

likes to re-arrange my sand a lot, and when he first went in he decimated a couple of my plants (lfs warned me of this), but he seems to have stopped now, i think its because hes too big to lay on the leaves anymore. he also only went for specific plants, cant remember what they were though. ive now got crypts, amazon swords and anubis and he leaves them alone. no aggression at all, apart from if hes sitting somewhere my big syno wants to sit, they squabble for 2 seconds and the plec swims off somewhere else.

very underrated i think, the colours and markings are stunning, especially when his rusty red fins are being flared, looks amazing. nice and chunky build to his body aswell. i'll try get some pics, but he doesnt come out much during the day. he used to, but now now for some reason.
