Hello.
I have a 10gal tank with a hood that has 2 incandescent light bulbs in it. When I go to replace a bulb the glass part seems to spin free from the metal part (the bottom part of the bulb) witch seems to be RUSTED to the light socket.
I then have to take off the hood and unscrew the metal part with pliers (getting rust all over the place). I have tried different types of bulbs along with different brands and they all seem to do this.
My question is, is there any way to stop the rusting from happening? Perhaps there is something I can apply to the socket before inserting a new bulb?

Any help would be great, thanks!

I'd say get something underneath it.

I'd try getting another hood and light type.

In my tank, the glass on the bulb came out and I ended up using pliers, like you. it's not a good feeling when there's a chance your fish could get shocked.

I'm not sure if you can use condensation trays in conjunction with all hoods, but you could try...

Water and electricity do not mix very well, you should look for a way to seal up the unit to prevent condensation. If you can't do that, try a light coating of petroleum jelly on the threads of the new bulb. Petroleum jelly is used on the O-rings and seals of cannister filters, it will not harm the fish at all. I've used it on plumbing traps for years, it doesn't harden like plumbers putty, making removal of the cleanout plugs much easier. Grease has been used on turn signal and brake light bulbs on cars for as long as I can remember, petroleum jelly is just a much more refined, cleaner type of grease.

I do not have anything inbetween the bulb and water, however there is a good 4 inches or so of space. i would think that would be enough space, however its possible i am wrong.
I am thinking of buying a new tank, my fish keep having babbies and 16 fish in a small 10gal tank isnt working out to well.. however tanks are quite expensive :(

Thanks for your help..
