I have a hang on thermometer on the SW tank, and it is rusting at the top, where it is out of the water. I am assuming this is bad for the water, am I right? This was supposed to be ss.

I dont know if its bad or not, however, I dont think I would take any chances. I use one that sticks to the out side of the glass. I checked it with a friends guage, and it was right on the money. If I remember correctly I only paid a few bucks for it.

you should get it out asap, any think with metal is extremly bad for the tank!!!

amen to both of the previous posts, I thought that as well, but wasn't sure I was being paranoid?!

lol, no porblem, i'm alway paranoid when it comes to fish!!

yep even stainless stell will rust in salt water in time. the only metal safe is titanium and that is why things like chillers are expensive as these have titanium pipes in side them.

ste :)

Metal on thermometers is toxic to all fish and invertebrates. You should ALWAYS use a plastic thermometer, or an electric one with a plastic probe.

wow very good advice everyone...............thank you very much.

I am glad I am not the only parnoid fish parent out there! :shifty:

I've got an electronic thermometer, with a plastic probe. It works great, and you don't have to squint to tell the temperature, since it's displayed digitally.
