hi i have a 20 gallon tank. i have got 3 upside down cat fish in it and 7 neon tetras. i just added 8 rummynose tetras 4 days ago and one died after a 2 days and the rest never got there red bacck in there face. my ph is 6.5 and ammonia abnd nitrites are 0. i got an air pump for a 30 gallon and a filter for a 40 gallon. i start out with R/O water then add R/O right and i use ph stable. ca any one tell me why that one died and why the others dont have there bright red faces like they did at the pet store. and will the otehr 7 die to? and help would great thanks alot.

It might be very simple... If they have only been with you 2 days they still may be a little stressed about their "adoption", that could cause them to have faded coloring. Some rummy nose tetras never again show as bright a color (maybe their new tank dosen't appeal to them as much) you could spend a lifetime trying to figure that one out. Gosh, the one that died - I'd be cautious and watch the others but I would probably just think that that one was injured or "scared" to death.
Best of luck with the tank. Sounds like a prettyfish set up.

ALASKA :)

rummys can be very sensitive to stress etc so I'd put the initial death down to that. As for the colouration give it a few more days and let them settle in and if your conditions remain good you should see them improve... they are great fish and I don't think you'll regret picking them. I have quite a few in my main community tank and they look amazing when they all shoal together, especially when the light is on. Lovely :D

another fish just died i tested and everything was the same as i stated before why the death. and what should the total desolved solids be for them and hardness??
would that be it? thanks for any help guys!

my3 cat upside down cat fish look great and so do the neons so im baffled. i know rummynose tetras are the hardest to keep but the others should show so stress bgut they act normal like before. would it be to many fish or something like that.

Did you add all 8 at once?

It sounds like you're a good fishkeeper, but how did you introduce them into the tank?

There are so many variables, and don't take it hard on yourself. Stress can't be avoided in the hobby, so don't feel badly if they did actually die of stress.

What is your local tapwater like?

If you are using stabilised RO, and the lfs tapwater and it is hard alkali stuff like most places, then you could be shocking your fish with the difference in water chemistry. Rummy Noses are a sensitive "species", (in quotes because there are actually 3 species sold under the same common name).

they very in size from about 1 1/4 to 2 inch and i let them flout in the bag for like 15 mintues then added a cup of aqurium water every 5 minutes 3 times them used a net to fish them out and them all in after that. so they did go all in at once. the pet shop i get it from start with r/o water and adjusts it to 6.5. so is there anything i did wrong or am i over stocking it? thanks again.

i was there 2 weeks before i got them and they didnt have em then. but im not sure how old they were when they got to the store.

You are using RO water, but is the tank at the lfs filled with it, that was my question really. It would be most unusual for lfs to hold their stock in non tapwater, because most of their customers will be doing this.

They use the same water as the customers to prevent osmotic shock, which is what I am trying to establish is a possibility with your fish.

When I buy fish, they are almost universally in tap water. My tanks are low pH, low hardness RO systems. I have a 2 week quarantine period over which I switch the fish from tap water to system water by frequent water changes.

yes they use ro water then adjust ph to 6.5 . they use ro water on there other tanks and adjust the ph different. so yes they use it.

Hey. I have rummynoses and had a LOT of trouble introducing them to the tank. I lost several within a day or two and the other took a few days to get their color back. Even after that, they still would hide in the plants all the time for a few weeks. Finally, they completely adjusted and they now dart up and down the length of the tank in a tight little school.
