i heard that if kept in alkaline conditions then the red colour on the head of this fish will start to fade which obviously indicates a problem but would they be suitable in a ph of 7.6? im interested in keeping a small group of these maybe 7 or 8 :)

I think you would be okay. I am looking to get some myself and my ph is 7.8 to 8.0. Keep up with your water changes.

That's very similar to my PH and mine are always a vivid red.Get as many as you can safely keep, they're excellent.
Washed out colouring of the nose, is said to indicate a problem with the water quality.
