Rubber Nose Plec compatability

Crap.

Well, this will be my leverage for persuading the wife for you can guess what. ;)

I have a RTBS in a 20 gal (UK, 90 litres), he's fully grown and does fine with 3 port hoplo's and a golden nugget plec and has done for 3 years. I certainly wouldn't put 1 in a 20 gal US or anything smaller though. In my experience RTBS are only agressive to their own kind and anything resembling their own kind but have no problem with bottom feeders. In fact mine is often chased by my plec, who is pretty much half the size of the RTBS.

my friends mom has a redtail in a heavily planted 10 gallon with like 3 other fish and everyone is doing great!

That is too small i'm afraid, when he is full grown at 5-6" he won't have enough room with or without other fish. :/

well hers is at full size and has almost out lived its life! it is at full color and has never been ill!

I'm really glad to hear that, i just wanted to point out that RTBS are pretty active fish and a 10 gal gives them little room to swim around. I don't doubt that he's healthy, i just wouldn't want beginners to read this and think that its generally OK to put a RTBS in a 10 gal. There are always exceptions and so there should be, things would be boring otherwise.

I hope your mum's goes on for a few more years yet. :D
