Hey guys,

i know its not possible to give an exact figure, obviously, but could anybody give me a rough figure on what getting all the equipment for a 40 gal tank would be, if i wanted to convert?

just the prices of all the essential things needed added together.

Thanks in advance for replies guys.

Basically its a little impossible until you decide what you want to keep. Certain species and obviously full reef over fowlr or fish only will dictate what equipment you need.

If you decide you want full reef, you then need to decide what types of corals you wish to keep, just softies, LPS or SPS. This impacts on your lighting decision and therefore on the cost of converting.

I must warn you, this side of the hobby is both seriously addictive and expensive, however it also seriously rewarding too.

Have a look around the journals and look at Live Aquaria for the type of fish you like (good selection to look at and reasonable estimates on tank size requirements). Just put Live Aquaria into search engine and it should come up first.

Then when you have decided what type of set up with the type of fish you are looking at and the type of corals you wish to keep if going for full reef, come back to us and we will be able to help you much more.

you could spend thousands and thousands. Or very little. It depends what you want to keep as tiger says.

Salt - £50
Test kits - £50
refractometer - £30
Powerheads - £100
Skimmer - £100
Lighting - £100
Live Rock £10/kilo Basic rule is 1 kilo per 2.2 gallons
Sand - £20
R/O - £80

You can obviously save a lot of money by buying things 2nd hand, try ebay, aquarist classifieds, UR

ok thanks for the useful advice guys, ill go do my research now :) and i'll be back if im still looking into it :good:

if you were trying to get it on the cheap and are patient you could potentially get it for

2 korali 1s £35
salt £50 for a big tub 25kg
sand about £17
LR about £5-6 p KG if you look around
protein skimmer £60
RO water from LFS
test kit £25
Hydrometer £5

lighting im assuming you have.. bare in mind this is if you look around and get most stuff 2nd hand and are looking to get one set up cheaply.

these prices are based on what i got them at by sourcing but will be getting a refractometer soon. also protein skimmer

Superman, if the lighting is standard lighting, depending on what he wants to keep, the depth of the tank and what is already fitted, this could actually be the most expensive part of swapping to marine.
