I had 4 roselines in a 55 gallon tank with no problems for months. Switched them to a new 125 and they were fine. Noticed the tank was a little cool so I put the heater on. When I came back they were gasping and dying--clearly needed more air. All of them died.

Fixed the oxygen problem, got 3 new roselines that are smaller. Same thing is happening, though not as severely--mostly affecting one of them, but the others don't look their best. There are no heat or oxygen problems right now. pH and ammonia levels are good.

My guppies are all hanging out at one corner of the top of the tank also (though not gasping), if that is a clue.

Any ideas?

A few questions that spring to mind, in no particular order...

Temp setting of 125g?
What filters and powerheads are running (please giving lph rating if possible)?
Are any filters placed above the waterline to give major rippling?
Are the 125g filters mature ones carried over from previous tank i.e. definitely cycled?
How long did you acclimitise the Roselines (Redline Torpedo Barbs) for, both the transferred and the newly bought ones?
Drip acclimitisation or other method?
If the 125g was a second-hand purchase, did you give it a major clean, if so what with?

I had 7 Torpedo barbs and I too faced the same problem. If there is not enough aeration in the tank and I mean, they definatly need either an air stone or a lot of surface agetation ( yes i know this doesnt exactly PUT oxygen in the water but it helps) and the temperature raises around 3-6 degrees then chances are they will die.

I literally moved my filter outlet under the water, the temperature rose by 4 degrees due to a warm night, and for me some reason putting my heater to 24, and what happend. Morning came and my barbs were wedged in caves, upside down, D.E.A. DEAD :(

bad times!

So in future I would just make sure there is a LOT of oxygen going into the water, that it doesnt really reach more than 27 degrees and everything should be hunky dory!

Paul, Thanks for the information. I too started up my heater just to raise the temperature a couple of degrees, and the rest is history. The sad thing was I moved them to the bigger tank to give them a better environment, so much for that, thanks again Jeff...
