Oh dear the possibilities . . . this is too scary!

My roommate has decided that University life doesn't suit her, and she's determined to move out. This means I will soon have our double room to myself, so her desk will soon be available to hold spawn and growout tanks, and her bed would give me plenty of space for the jars if I just throw a sheet of plastic over it to protect it (or slide the mattress off into the corner).

I'm so excited I don't even want to be this excited- it doesn't seem healthy! :fun: But this means I've got a much better chance of encouraging these guys to spawn- they turned eight months old last week, so I feel like time is wasting!

Elphaba right now is looking the healthiest of all the girlies, and her finnage/colouration has actually begun to surpass Nessarose's. Elphie is the closest to a proper HM, and she's certainly the one best suited to give Fiyero a real run for his money in terms of temperament (read: she's a first class shrew :look: ) If I start conditioning them properly today or tomorrow, they could be ready to go by early October (I want to give them a little extra prep time because of their age).

Thoughts? :)

Sounds great. Glad things worked out!! It just doesn't seem right to be so happy that your roommate is leaving haha! Well I can't say much, I pay extra to have a single room, and I was jumping for joy when my Sophmore year roommate got pregnant at Christmas and didn't come back.

Hehe I know I felt guilty at first too :*) I had a long talk with her tonight, though, and she really isn't happy here, so now I feel better about planning what I'm going to do with her desk, heehee!

On the subject of desk decorations, I was in the dollar store tonight and found a whole host of Tupperware and cereal container thingies that all sell for a buck each (gotta love the dollar store!). They range in size from much too small for anything but a couple grapes to the size of ice cream containers (there are only a few of those, though). The average size appears to be about one litre, which is something like 35 ounces. Would this be an okay size for jarring fry? They even have flip-up tops that would be great for feeding. I could buy some two litre ones; they're even the same price, but I'm not sure there are enough of them in stock if I happen to have a pretty big spawn . . . maybe I could just pick my favourite fry and let them live in the big ones

lol. It does seem kinda weird to be practically jumping for joy at your room-mates leaving, but Bettas are awesome!!!!

She's leaving tomorrow- I've been sitting here telling myself that I will not spawn Fiyero and Elphie until they're good and ready. I will not *repeats it softly to herself* :look:

I have, however, definitely begun to lean towards buying my jars from the dollar store, starting with the larger ones they have in stock (though I haven't settled yet on a particular style- there are a couple different shapes). While I would love to get a good-sized spawn out of these guys, due to their age and inexperience (coupled with my own inexperience) I don't think it's reasonable of me to expect a very high number of survivors, so I may not need to put any of them in smaller containers after all. Time will tell :)

(of course now that I've said that, watch them have like five hundred and me run around, stacking Tupperware to the ceiling and swearing off betta breeeding for the rest of my life  )

Quick update to say I've started conditioning them properly today. Fresh water change, perfect temps, etc. and tonight at supper I asked the nice lady at the caf if I could have a hard boiled egg. She's such a dear- she just blinked at me and I was just trying not to laugh so I don't think I explained as fast as I should have :p

Lady: A hard-boiled egg?
Me: Yup.
Lady: A hard-boiled egg.
Me: An egg.
Lady: Hard-boiled?
Me: Yup. It's for my fish.
Lady: Your fish?
Me: Yup. I have fish.
Lady: And you want an egg for them?
Me: Well, just the yolk, really. They only eat the yolk. It's for the protein. But I can eat the outside.
Lady: A hard-boiled egg yolk.
Me: Well, you can just give me the whole egg. I'll cut the yolk out myself.
Lady: Alright, dear, I'll see what I can do . . .
Me: (trying to pretend like the whole line isn't giving me weird looks by now) Thank you very much!

Ah, dear . . . the things I do for these guys  And of course they were ecstatic when I gave it to them . . . I made the mistake of sticking my finger into the water to get some smushed egg off it, and Nessarose did everything she could to drill a hole right to the bone! It didn't hurt, really, but she's got some kind of jaw on her; I had to lift my finger out of the water before she'd let go

So everybody is benefiting from Fiyero and Elphie's new health plan, and as soon as I hear back from the LPS I'll know where I stand as to other foods, too.

I'm getting so excited! :D
