Are slate roof tiles OK to use in the tank?? I have a fair bit of it knocking round, just wanted to make sure it was suitable to make some caves out of.

Hi,

I'll answer as no one else has although I am not an authority on this subject. Pure slate is certainly ok and regularly used in cave making.

I think the main thing to look out for is brown rust patches indicating the presents of iron and should be avoided.

as said above brown pathces is iron ore in the slate, a good test if you're using low quality slate is to drop a drop of vinegar onto the slate or patches if it bubbles dont use it.

I build my own caves from slate, I tend to use slate which has been crafted for floors, its thick and pretty strong, and also tends to be pure slate (if thats even possible, seeing how slate is produced, lol)

You may find roofing slates to be a bit thin and when you are cutting them to size they may shatter, but it depends.

Yeah I have used flooring slate before and it was really good. I just liked the look of the thinner roof slates so might give them a go but if it does not pan out then will stick with good old fashioned slate flooring tiles!!
