hey i thinking about adding some smooth white ish rocks going to look round BnQ or something like that and was just wondering if there is anything i have to consider and what is needed before putting them in my tank like boiling them and ect cheers

There are a few things to consider, one of which is cleanliness which you've already said about.

Be careful of boiling rocks though. Some may contain air pockets which if heated could cause the rock to explode.

Other things would be making sure it won't change the tanks ph. Or other stats.

Hopefully someone else could advise on some that are known to be safe?

ah right ye i forgot about that i was thinking of like pouring boiling water over it to kill anything off rather than have the sat for awhile boiling away that might stop the exploding. but ye does anyone know what rocks would be safe which defiantly to stay clear off cheers

Someone on here said pour vinegar on the rocks, if it fizzes its not safe, if it doesn't its okay. I always go for hard rocks that don't crumble/dissolve, i think these are usually safe. You could put a rock in a bucket of water for a few weeks and monitor the ph if in doubt.

lol off to BnQ with a bottle of vinegar lol i joke ye that sounds good i was thinking more on the lines of a smooth large pebble style rock ( if that makes sense) and ye good idea on the bucket first cheers

I know limestone isn't safe, I know slate is...

i might try and find out if my lfs has them and then see what type they are and then get them cheaper from a rock place ( forgot proper name) im after white large ish pebbles

Have a look in garden centers, they have several types of nice looking rocks for garden rockeries, ive just bought 2 large rocks and a large piece of slate for £3.50 each, in a fish shop they sell for £3 a kg, the rocks i got weigh 10kg each so that would have cost me about £30 each in a fish shop

I got some great 'spaghetti rock' from maidenhead. might not be super cheap, but looks good and great for growing plants on as there are holes for the roots.
