it would depend on the rock in question.

I would add that as well as the chemical and physical properties of the various rock types, rocks collected from gardens may well have been exposed to weedkiller, pest control chemicals and various other things that will be injurious to your tank. Boiling in water will remove water soluable products. Some long term agents may slowly leach into the tank.

I have used garden and locally collected rocks/stones for decades, so it is basically okay, just be careful.
