I want to get a flat rock to put in my tank so if my oscars decide to spawn they will have a flat surface on which to do it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what type of rock I should or should not get? Thanks.

I've used Basalt granite like rock but just dark (more for the looks) and heavy so they can't move. After they dig or while vaccuming out the gravel place a rock all the way to the bottom of the tank then put the gravel around it. Slate works any semi smooth to smooth river rock will do the trick just as long as they can't move it off the bottom. Even Terra Cotta (the brown pot for planting not smoking) will do the trick. Now adays you can get them in all sizes and shapes. If you're cheap ask if they have broken ones for you to have (go on shipping days). I've had a friend who put one of those "Chia-Pets" and they bred on it. So I guess anything will do.

I use a large peice of slate for my jags, which would also do for oscars. I would try and give them a variety of rocks as part of the decorations for your tank they will choose the one that suits their needs.
