We are looking into starting our first marine tank (or at least my partner is) and it is likely to be a 30-45 litre tank. We are trying to consider what would be best a RO unit (though the thought of attaching one to our rented flat makes us go a bit pale) or doing a run each month to buy stock of RO water and store it.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Unless your LFS is right next door I would recommend getting your own RO unit. As its a smaller tank (at the moment, probably wont be too long before you start thinking of an upgrade ;) ) you wont need a massive one.

I would highly recommend www.ro-man.com

I would also highly recommend getting the Y fitting that will go on the cold water supply to your washing machine. This way you dont have to make any holes in water pipes and its easy to move if you need to later on.

2x on getting your own ro system. It becomes a pain to go to your lfs every time you need some water. Especially for those emergencies that always seem to happen whenever they are closed.

i have my own and wouldnt be without it now...its in the garage ( some idiot had the bright idea to lay carpet and turn it into a gym :D) and ive flooded it 5 times min, so i found this little gadget for under 3 quid on ebay.. it emitts a buzzing or bleeping when the water level reaches the sensor ( of course you need to be at home to hear it!) if you have rented property its worth it :)

itme number for overflow alarm 140352836347

I buy my RO from the LFS I have 3 x 25L containers 1 x RO 2 x Salt these last me 4 weeks or so it works out about £11 a month and is easier for me.

This is enough for both my tanks totaling 260L.

As I go to my LFS at least twice a month the fuel costs are negated

If go for a 100Gal + tank I will consider my own RO :)

I would not order from the RO-Man onlne call them as there are mumors about the UK shop at the moment and a number of people are have reported not recieving anything there is an active link on UR regarding this.

Also Shelagh I have seen a good idea somewhere else where basicaly you use a toilet type float and switch once the barrel/container is full it closes the water supply off mightbe over kill but it depends on how much water you are making at a guess.

Another thing that might work is one of those float switches that are used in auto top off systems. Shelagh's idea sounds much more simple though.
