I have swallowed my pride (and £50 lol) and decided im going to rip out my rock background once tank is cycled. Im getting more repelled by it every day and i think its spoiling the overall look of my tank, not to mention the room its taking up. Everything will be much nicer and easier with it out. I know theres been some posts on how to take it out carefully but can anyone remember the links as i cant find them? Will the silicon make a mess of the glass? I cant believe ive paid £50 for someone thats lasted 4 weeks

Next step will be to take out the internal filter but im not that brave.....yet!

You got more use out of your £50 than I did. I took the background and Juwel filter out of my Juwel Lido in less than a month. All I did was use a brand new stanley knife blade and push it through the silicon. The Juwel silicon is black, so it leaves a messy looking black circle, but this is easily removed by carefully scraping it with the blade.

Be careful when you remove the background, because it is very bouyant and will spring to the surface, taking half your plants with it, if it is not kept tightly held down by one hand. By the time I had removed both items and transferred the filter media to my new cannister filter, the tank capacity increased by about 20l.

What kind of a background are you going for? Plain black is great for allowing emphasis of the plants.

Dave.

Yeah a sharp stanley knife blade should do the trick, just make sure you take you time with it. When I sent my new tank up I was very tempted to get a similar background, glad I didnt now :)

Thanx for that Dave. Im going to take it out once my tank is cycled. I plan to remove 90% of the water so while im doing this i can take out the background. Im also aquascaping whilst doing the water change so plants will be out the way :) Will the filter media be ok for an hour or two? I dont want to risk the bacteria dying off.

Im going to go for a laminated background which has black one side and dark blue the other so if i get fed up i can swap it round.

Wish i didnt either. They are expensive, ugly and not really practical!
