Poor old Sylvester the crab has died.
He was in the process of moulting at the time and had just started to leave the old shell when the stress took too much out of him. I had him for nearly two years and in that time he had his fair share of troubles! For the last 2 months, he had to be hand fed as he lost one claw just before his last moult and the second just after it.
last year he lost all but three legs and had a disease which causes the legs to get stiff so every hour or so we had to turn him rightside up cos he was always falling onto his back. He eventually grew back all his claws after a month and had been fine up until he lost his claw in a fight with the female crab.
Both claws would have grown back this moult as he had two large bulges where the claws should have been. Just before he was to moult again he lost the growing claw on the left side but one claw wuld have kept him going.
With no claws, crabs cant eat, so twice a day he had to be taken from the tank and fed bloodworm and brineshrimp in my hand. For the last few weeks he would always be waiting at the front of the tank or on the top of the driftwood to be taken out and fed, so we will miss seeing his little face peering out at us when we get home
Heres a recent pic of the poor mite with no claws, and below it as a young fella.
So long Sly!
