Well, I have an update for you all. The day after Sam died my gf's dad's dog died as well. Kelly was pretty close to him so we have both been kind of numb the last few days. Then as we got to my mum's house to bury Sam we noticed a dead cat in the gutter out the front. Some a$$hole had deliberately swerved at it and hit it. There were tire marks in the gravel on the side of the road leading right to the poor thing. They were obviously speeding to begin with and had sped up to hit him before he could escape onto the footpath, the poor little fella was only a step or two away from making it too when he would have been hit.
Whoever it was had done a good job of it too, most of it's head was missing, everything above the bottom jaw (which was a twisted mess) was completely gone and the rest of the body was also mangled beyond recognition. When I picked the poor bugger up it was like every bone in his body was shattered and there was nothing holding his form together. I am only glad that it would have been an instant death and he didn't suffer.
I thought it was mum's nextdoor neighbor's cat at first and asked them if they owned it but they said they didn't and he had been hanging around for a few weeks, most likely a stray. I took him and buried him with Sam and told them that if anyone comes asking about him to tell them I buried him. When he was alive Sam was a bit of an oddity for a male cat, he'd kick the heck out of anything that came in the yard that wasn't supposed to be there (including said neighbors cats when I lived there, pretty embarrassing lol) yet any cat we brought home that was younger than him he would absolutely dote upon. We had one cat who was taken away from his parents too soon (not by us) and didn't know how to clean himself so Sam used to do it for him. It was pretty funny watching him grab him and pin him down to wash him as if he was the cat's mum and the whole time Sparky would be carrying on because he didn't want a bath lol. Anyhow, long story short, I think Sam would have been happy that I buried that cat with him.
