My crested gecko had an unfortunate incident a few weeks back involving her substrate (a natural peat based mixture). I think there was not enough moisture and humidity in her enclosure and I blame myself for it (and it was not cricket related, there were no crickets in the enclosure, my inital worry). I called the vet and he walked me through helping her dislodge it from the back of her mouth and throat. Within a day or two she was moving about and drinking and even eating again, and started a shed. I thought we were in the clear. I redid her tank to make it easier for both her and me to get to and monitor the water dishes, I was being much more vigilant in staying on top of the humidity. Yesterday I noticed she was still in the corner where she had been the day before. As its winter and she doesn't usually move much, I didn't really think much of it. Last night as I went to turn out the anoles light, I checked on her. She appeared to be very much dead. Her eyes were sunken in, it was not a pretty sight. I didn't have the energy or heart to do anything about it last night, have that to look forward to after work today. She was a great little gecko, with personality. She was getting used to being handled and I loved holding her. I had researched on cresteds for a year before I even got her and I had plans to upgrade her tank and possibly even get a second crested in the coming months. I'm going to miss the little girl, but I won't be getting another gecko for some time.

Here's some pictures of my little Betty. RIP Little Girl......

So sorry to hear that, she was very beautiful. R.I.P little gecko.

Awww that's a real shame... bad luck. As a fellow reptile lover I sympathise :-( . Substrates can be a pain in the behind with geckos... I keep my leopard gecko on paper towels because she's so clumsy when she strikes that I'm convinced she'd become impacted with a loose substrate. My day gecko is kept on coconut fibre though. It's not usually as much of a risk with arboreal geckos as it is with terrestrial geckos as they tend to hunt the bugs down as they climb up branches and plants from what I can gather. Don't blame yourself too much, if she was going to grab a bit of substrate along with a bug then it probably wouldn't have made a lot of difference whether the peat was damp or slightly drier. You're not supposed to keep the substrate totally wet all the time or it'll mould over, so it's really not your fault.

Cute to say i don't like reptitles. :rip:
