Last night, my glass catfish, Fester, passed away. We were treating him for severe bacterial swimbladder and after Richie tested the water, I panicked as I could see him gasping for air in an ammonia filled hospital tank. We moved him, too soon as it turned out, back to his big tank home. He struggled to swim due to the fact that after rolling round at great speed at the bottom of both tanks for over a month, he had scraped away a huge chunk of his jaw. Panicking again, we did a water change and carried him back to the hospital tank but it wasn't to be. The water was too cold and he was too cold to swim. I held him in my hand in the water to try and warm him up with my body heat whilst Richie tried to heat the water.
He hung on for half an hour in my hand before dying shortly after 11pm.
Am devistated that he died in my hand after so much progress. We really loved that little chap, but I'm just thankful I could be with him and care for him during his last moments.
So really just want to warn people to catch swimbladder issues early and make sure your fishies don't get scraped up like our poor little Fester was. I wish I'd caught it sooner and its a mistake I'm sure many people make, especially us new to fishkeeping.
