Alrighty…

HI everyone, have just discovered there is a riffle (basically Australian native counterpart to bamboo) shrimp (that was caught from the creek) in my tank. (Just to be clear- I knew it was there but didn’t actually know what the shrimp was. Long story as to why it was there). Am looking for care hep/suggestions as I have been reading and they seem pretty difficult to care for, to the extent that I am considering putting it back in the creek where I found it (or my tinesy backyard pond).

WHAT I KNOW-
- It’s peaceful and won’t eat my fish
- It’s a filter feeder and has no claws (instead has feather duster things) which means it eats particles from the water
- It likes some current (I think)
- It seems pretty jolly picky about what it does and doesn’t eat

WHAT I DON’T-
- What to feed it
- How to feed it
- Tank size
- Water parameters (ph etc)
- Whether it is social/needs a group/is fine being solo
- Basically anything about shrimp (I have never kept a shrimp in my life)

From another thread (what shrimp is this?) I know that they’ll eat crushed brine shrimp (thanks MagnumMan). I also heard about someone else that never feeds it and it eat random stuff floating in the water and just pops out sometimes (can’t remember where I read that, but I did).

TIA!

plankton, infusoria, green water. most pet shops sell a marine invert food. its a brown liquid and that works

When you say marine, do you mean saltwater or just for aquariums in general? Just curious. Also, will they accept crushed up flakes fed from a Pipette? I’ll try out a infusoria, but I’m sure that’ll attract some weird looks and even weirder comments from the people I live with…

How big is your tank and how heavily planted is it? also how high is the flow?
I have a very dense high flow jungle tank, and I've had them before for around 2 years, and just got 2 more. They enjoy supplemental feeding, but as long as there's enough debris falling, they should be totally fine.
crushed flakes might work, but they will have to be made into almost a powder. I'm experimenting with other foods such as processed Duckweed...

Take it from someone who grows infusoria and green water under their parent's roof--gallon ice cream buckets, Folger's coffee tins, and other opaque plastic containers with lids make the perfect "out of sight, out of mind" culture container when living with others. While I'm not sure if you share a living space with somebody (I have my own bedroom), in my experience the green water smelt the worse--a bit like stinky aquarium water, or what you'd siphon out of your gravel. Overall not too noticeable, but if you have roommates or are living with someone a tad bit more perceptive when it comes to new smells/sights, I would simply advise doing it outdoors (depending on your weather right now, in my area it's currently between 30-40 degrees F) or asking a friend if they could keep it at their place.

Processed duckweed? Like duckweed, but dried and/or crushed? You'll have to update on how that works, as that sounds relatively intriguing!

You can put any kind of fertilizer in a glass container with water in the sun, and have green water in days.

If it's not green, flush, wash it and try once again, when you get green water, seed your new glasses with it, 3 glasses in rotation in your kitchen window is a lot of free shrimp food.

Just wanted to update...

Still working on the infusoria/green water (I haven't got around to it yet :/) but riffle's going well! The other day I saw the tank and thought I saw a very decayed shrimp carcass and panicked but it turned out to be a molt (which I haven't experienced before) and shrimpie is still doing fine. I'm currently feeding it essence of flake (I get the flake and squish it between my fingers in water, which basically reduces it to atom-sized particles that mr/mrs/ms shrimp can eat) and seems to be happy (no stressed colours or anything!). Love him as a part of my tank and now couldn't ever get rid of him!
