:-( Hi,
Not the best news here , but my goldfish and 2 comets have succomed to white spot. I noticed this just before christmas. At first only 1 seemed to be infected so I bought some white spot control. I added this to the tank as per the instructions , however today , the last of the fish died.

I've had the fish for over 3 years and don't know how the White Spot arrived in the tank. I changed 20% of the water every 2 weeks and the tank was fully aerated with a fluval 1 filter too. The fish were always very lively and looked v healthy.

Anyway , what do I have to do with my tank in order to restock it with new fish ? Is it just a case of removing everything in it (gravel , plants , filter etc) and starting afresh? Will the white spot bacteria remain in the tank ?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks
Jen

White spot stays in the gravel and will only go for fish that are weakened or stressed in some way.
What size of tank is it because as goldies grow then the need for more space and if they dont get it then they get stressed which allows diseases to take hold.
The filter doesnt sound big enough to turnover the water 10 times each hour and only doing water changes once a fortnight may also be to blame.
For thet ank now you should either throw everything away and that includes the media from the filter and clean the tank out in a mild bleach solution (1 part bleach to 19 of water) and rinse the filter in this as well and rinse, rinse, and rinse again.
Or get a heater and raise the temperature to 90f and leave it like that for a week which should kill everything in the tank and keep the filter running as well. Do 50% water changes each day and use a gravel vac.

It's a 45 litre tank. The goldfish was about 3 inches long and the 2 comets were 2 inches and 1 1/2 inches long. Up until last month , there were never any probs...the fish sometimes looked a bit too frisky and alert..

Is this too many fish for that size of tank ?

Thanks

i would use pond disinfectent, this is what i use when ever i buy new planets or a new tank, the good thing about this is when there is no more foaming the disinfectent has been washed out.

did you buy any planets for your tank? this could of had white spot on it as well

Way too many fish im afraid.
For a 10 gallon tank you cant put any size of common goldfish in it but you can put in a fancy goldfish.
The fish you had were really stunted as at 3 years they should be at least 8 inches long and the comets bigger.
